Q Without U Words

Getting stuck with Q and no U is common. These words save your turn: QI (11 pts), QAT (12 pts), QOPH (18 pts), QADI (14 pts), QAID (14 pts), QANAT (14 pts), QINTAR (15 pts), and QWERTY (21 pts). Memorizing this short list is one of the biggest edges in competitive Scrabble.

Mid-Word X Strategy

X is one of the rarest letters, but most X-words contain it in the middle, not at the start. EXACT (14 pts), BOXER (14 pts), and HEXED (16 pts) are easier to play than X-start words. Focus on finding mid-word X placements that connect with existing board tiles.

J Words Beyond J-Start

Most players only think of J at the start (JUMP, JOKE). But MAJOR (14 pts), ENJOY (15 pts), BANJO (14 pts), and PROJECT (18 pts) contain J in the middle. These are easier to play and often reach premium squares more reliably.

How the Contains Filter Helps Each Game

The letter-contains search works differently in each word game. Here's how to use it for maximum advantage:

Scrabble Rack Plays

When your rack has a tricky letter like Q, X, or Z, use the Contains filter to find every word that uses it. Combine with length and dictionary filters to find the highest-scoring valid play for your exact situation.

Crossword Solving

When you know certain letters must appear in the answer, the Contains filter narrows options quickly. Combine known letters with the word length filter to go from hundreds of possibilities to just a few.

Words With Friends

WWF uses the ENABLE dictionary, which includes some words not found in Scrabble's TWL/SOWPODS. Tile values also differ: J is worth 10 in WWF versus 8 in Scrabble. Always use the dictionary filter to verify words for your specific game.
