What is Wordle?

Wordle is a simple yet addictive online word game that challenges players to find a five-letter word in six guesses – with a new puzzle published every day. Created by British software engineer Josh Wardle in 2021, the game became a worldwide phenomenon and was acquired by The New York Times in 2022.

What started as a fun game for Wardle and his partner quickly went viral. Thanks to the easily shareable colored grid results on social media, the user base exploded from just 90 players in November 2021 to over 300,000+ players by early 2022. Today, millions play Wordle daily!

How to Play Wordle

Wordle is easy to learn but challenging to master:

  1. Guess a 5-letter word – Start by entering any valid five-letter word
  2. Check the colors – After each guess, tiles change color:
    • Green = Correct letter in the correct position
    • Yellow = Correct letter but wrong position
    • Gray = Letter not in the word at all
  3. Use the clues – Refine your next guess based on the colors
  4. Solve in 6 tries – You have 6 attempts to find the word
  5. Share your results – Share your colored grid (spoiler-free!) with friends

How to Use the Wordle Solver

Our Wordle word finder makes solving puzzles easy:

  1. Enter green letters – Type letters that turned green in their exact positions (1-5)
  2. Enter yellow letters – Type letters that turned yellow in any of the yellow tiles. The solver finds all words containing them
  3. Enter gray letters – Type all letters that turned gray to exclude them from results
  4. View matches instantly – Results appear on this page as soon as you search

Understanding Wordle Colors

Master the color system to solve puzzles faster:

Green Tiles (Correct Position)

The letter is in the word AND in the exact right spot. Keep this letter in the same position for all future guesses. For example, if the 'A' in position 2 turns green, every guess should have 'A' as the second letter.

Yellow Tiles (Valid Letters)

The letter is in the word but NOT in the right position. Enter these letters in the "Valid Letters (Yellow)" tiles and our solver will find all words containing them.

Gray Tiles (Not in Word)

The letter is NOT in the word at all. Eliminate this letter from all future guesses. Our solver's exclusion feature helps you filter out gray letters automatically.

Best Starting Words for Wordle

Your first guess matters more than you'd think. The NYT's WordleBot analyzes every game and recommends words based on information theory - how much each guess narrows down the remaining possibilities. I analyzed past Wordle answers, and the data consistently shows that E, A, R, O, and T are the five most frequent letters. A strong opening word tests as many of these as possible.

TRACE is currently the statistically optimal first guess according to multiple analyses, narrowly edging out SLATE and CRANE. But any word from the table below gives you a solid start. Some players prefer a two-guess combo strategy: SLATE followed by CRONY covers 10 of the most common letters in just two turns.

Word Why It's Good Letters Tested
CRANETop-rated by algorithmsC, R, A, N, E
SLATECommon consonants + 2 vowelsS, L, A, T, E
ADIEUTests 4 vowels at onceA, D, I, E, U

Wordle Tips & Tricks

Master these strategies to solve Wordle in fewer guesses:

1. Start with Vowel-Heavy Words

Words like ADIEU, AUDIO, or OUIJA test multiple vowels at once, quickly revealing which vowels are in the answer. We've compiled a full list of 5-letter words with the most vowels if you want to study them.

2. Use Common Consonants Early

Letters like R, S, T, L, N appear in the most English words. Include them in your first two guesses to maximize information.

3. Don't Reuse Gray Letters

Once a letter turns gray, never use it again. Our Wordle solver automatically filters out excluded letters for you.

4. Move Yellow Letters

Yellow means right letter, wrong spot. Always try yellow letters in NEW positions – never the same spot twice.

5. Consider Double Letters

Words like SPEED, CHILL, and VIVID have repeated letters. Don't forget this possibility when stuck!

6. Use Hard Mode for Practice

Hard Mode forces you to use all revealed hints. It's great practice for developing better strategies. Our Hard Mode strategy guide covers whether it's actually harder and when to use it.

Common Wordle Traps to Watch Out For

Even experienced players get caught by these patterns. Knowing them in advance saves you a guess or two.

Double Letters

Words like SPEED, CHILL, VIVID, and KNACK trip people up because the repeated letter doesn't always show in the color clues the way you'd expect. If one E turns green and another turns gray, the word has exactly one E. Don't automatically exclude a letter that's both yellow and gray in the same game.

The -IGHT Family

LIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, RIGHT, SIGHT, TIGHT, FIGHT, WIGHT. Once you know the word ends in -IGHT, you've still got 7+ valid options. This is where a strategic "sacrifice guess" helps. Try a word like FLAME that tests F, L, M, and other first-letter candidates at once, even though FLAME itself can't be the answer.

When to Sacrifice a Guess

If you're down to 10+ possibilities with similar patterns, it's often smarter to use a guess that eliminates multiple candidates rather than gambling on one. For example, if you've narrowed it to _ATCH words (BATCH, CATCH, HATCH, LATCH, MATCH, PATCH, WATCH), a word like CHIMP tests C, H, M, P all at once.
