What Is Dordle?
Dordle is a word puzzle that doubles the Wordle formula: you're solving two five-letter words at the same time, with just 7 guesses shared between both boards. Every word you type appears on both grids, and you get separate color feedback for each one.
The game was created by Guilherme Töws, an indie developer known online as Zaratustra. He published Dordle on itch.io in January 2022, right as Wordle was going viral worldwide. The concept clicked immediately: Dordle is rated 4.7 out of 5 on itch.io, and it inspired even bigger variants like Quordle (4 boards) and Octordle (8 boards).
How to Use the Dordle Solver
Our solver works for each Dordle board individually. Here's how to use it:
- Pick a board: Decide which Dordle board you need help with (Board 1 or Board 2).
- Enter green letters: Type any letters that turned green on that board in their exact positions (1 through 5).
- Enter yellow letters: Type letters that turned yellow on that board in any of the yellow tiles. The solver finds all words containing them.
- Enter gray letters: Type letters that turned gray on that board to exclude them from results.
- Review and guess: Matching words appear on this page. Pick one that also helps your other board!
Worked example: Say your first guess is CRANE. On Board 1, C turns green in position 1 and E turns green in position 5. On Board 2, R turns yellow and A turns yellow. Enter C in position 1 and E in position 5 for Board 1, and you might see words like CHIME, CLOSE, or CURVE. Then switch to Board 2's clues to narrow that side down.
Dordle Strategy: How to Solve Both Boards
Dordle's shared guess system means every word needs to work toward both solutions. These strategies help you get there in fewer turns.
Start With Information-Rich Words
Your opening words should test as many common letters as possible. Since each guess feeds both boards, a vowel-heavy opener like AUDIO or a consonant-balanced one like SLATE gives you data across both grids from the very first turn. Our analysis of the most common letters in English shows why E, A, R, O, and T are the letters to prioritize.
Read Both Boards Before Guessing
Don't tunnel-vision on one board. After each guess, check the color feedback on both sides before choosing your next word. A letter that's gray on Board 1 might be green on Board 2.
Solve the Easier Board First
If one board has 3 or 4 green letters after a couple of guesses, solve it. Every board you close frees up your remaining guesses for the harder one. There's no bonus for solving both on the same turn.
Watch Your Guess Count
Seven guesses sounds generous, but it's shared. If you spend 5 guesses on Board 1, you've only got 2 left for Board 2. Aim to solve each board in 3 to 4 guesses, leaving yourself a safety net.
Double Letters Are Trickier in Dordle
With two boards, the odds of hitting at least one double-letter word (like SPEED, CHILL, or KNACK) go up. If a letter shows green on one board and gray on the other, it doesn't mean the letter isn't in both words. Check each board's feedback separately. Double letters are one of the most common Wordle mistakes players make, and they're twice as likely to trip you up in Dordle.
Dordle vs Wordle: Key Differences
If you're coming from Wordle, here's what changes in Dordle:
| Wordle | Dordle | |
|---|---|---|
| Words to solve | 1 | 2 (simultaneous) |
| Total guesses | 6 | 7 |
| Guesses per word (avg) | 6.0 | 3.5 |
| Guess sharing | N/A | Each guess applies to both boards |
| Word list | ~2,300 (NYT curated) | ~12,900 words |
| Difficulty | Moderate | Hard |
| Created by | Josh Wardle | Guilherme Töws (Zaratustra) |
The biggest adjustment? That 3.5 guesses-per-word average. In Wordle, you can afford a "throwaway" guess to gather information. In Dordle, every guess needs to earn its keep across both boards.
Best Starting Words for Dordle
Your first guess matters even more in Dordle than in Wordle, because it generates clues for two boards at once. Strong openers test the most common English letters.
| Word | Why It Works | Letters Tested |
|---|---|---|
| SLATE | Tests S, L, A, T, E (5 of the 10 most common letters) | S, L, A, T, E |
| CRANE | High information value across both boards | C, R, A, N, E |
| AUDIO | 4 vowels in one guess, maximizes vowel coverage | A, U, D, I, O |
| RAISE | Common letters with 2 vowels | R, A, I, S, E |
Two-word combo tip: SLATE followed by CRONY covers 10 unique letters in just 2 guesses. That's almost half the alphabet tested across both boards before guess 3. For a deeper breakdown with frequency data, check our best Wordle starting words guide (the letter analysis applies to Dordle too).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Dordle?
Dordle is a word puzzle where you solve two five-letter words at the same time. You get 7 guesses total, and each guess applies to both boards. The game was created by Guilherme Töws (known online as Zaratustra) and launched in January 2022.
How many guesses do you get in Dordle?
You get 7 guesses total in Dordle. Unlike Wordle's 6 guesses for one word, Dordle's 7 guesses are shared across both boards. Every word you enter counts toward both puzzles, so each guess needs to pull double duty.
What's the difference between Dordle and Wordle?
Wordle gives you 6 guesses to find 1 word. Dordle gives you 7 guesses to find 2 words simultaneously. Each guess in Dordle applies to both boards at once, and you get separate color feedback for each board. Dordle also uses a broader word list of about 12,900 words compared to Wordle's curated 2,300.
What are the best starting words for Dordle?
SLATE and CRANE are strong openers because they test 5 of the most common English letters. For Dordle specifically, vowel-heavy words like AUDIO help since you need data for both boards fast. A two-word combo like SLATE followed by CRONY covers 10 unique letters in just 2 guesses.
Is Dordle harder than Wordle?
Yes. Dordle is significantly harder because you're solving two words with shared guesses. That works out to roughly 3.5 guesses per word, compared to Wordle's 6. You need to balance gathering information for both boards while not burning too many guesses on one.
Who created Dordle?
Dordle was created by Guilherme Töws, an indie game developer known online as Zaratustra. He published the game on itch.io in January 2022, shortly after Wordle went viral. The game is rated 4.7 out of 5 on itch.io.
How does the Dordle Solver work?
Enter the green letters (correct position), yellow letters (right letter, wrong position), and gray letters (not in the word) from either Dordle board. The solver filters a 12,900+ word list to show only words that match your clues. Use it separately for each board to narrow down both answers.
