Octordle Solver
Solve all 8 Octordle boards at once. Find the perfect 5-letter words to beat today's puzzle
Octordle Solver helps you tackle the toughest mainstream Wordle variant by filtering 12,900+ five-letter words based on your green, yellow, and gray clues. With 8 boards and 13 guesses, you can't afford to waste a single turn. Enter your tile colors and see every word that still fits.
What Is Octordle?
Octordle is the ultimate Wordle variant: solve eight five-letter words simultaneously in just 13 guesses. Every word you type appears on all 8 grids, and you get separate color feedback for each board. It's not for the faint-hearted.
The game was created by Kenneth Crawford in 2022, designed for players who found Quordle (4 boards) too easy. Octordle is free to play in any web browser, with no app or account required. It offers more game modes than any other variant, including Daily, Sequence, Rescue, and Challenge.
How to Use the Octordle Solver
With 8 boards to manage, the solver is most useful for the boards giving you the hardest time. Here's how:
- Pick a board: Focus on whichever of the 8 boards has the most clues (or the fewest remaining possibilities).
- Enter green letters: Type letters that turned green on that board in their exact positions.
- Enter yellow letters: Type letters that turned yellow on that board. The solver finds all words containing them.
- Enter gray letters: Type letters that turned gray on that board to exclude them.
- Solve, then repeat: Once you've solved a board, move to the next hardest one and enter its clues.
Worked example: After guessing SLATE and CRONY, check all 8 boards. Board 5 might show S green (position 1), T green (position 4), and E gray. Enter S in position 1 and T in position 4 for Board 5. The solver might narrow it down to STAID, STAMP, or STUNG. Pick the one that also tests useful letters for your other unsolved boards.
Tip: Don't use the solver until after your 3rd or 4th guess. You need enough data across all 8 boards for it to be useful.
Octordle Strategy: Managing 8 Boards at Once
Octordle isn't about being clever with individual words. It's about managing information across 8 boards with surgical precision. Here's how to do it.
The Opening Phase (Guesses 1-4): Maximize Information
Your first 4 guesses should test 20 unique letters across the alphabet. Don't try to solve anything yet. Recommended sequence: SLATE, CRONY, HUMID, then a fourth word covering remaining common letters. After 4 guesses, you'll have feedback on most of the alphabet across all 8 boards.
The Solving Phase (Guesses 5-9): Pick Off Easy Boards
After 4 scouting guesses, some boards will have 3-4 green letters. Solve these first. Each solved board is one less thing to track. If a board has only 2-3 possible words left, lock it in and move on.
The Endgame (Guesses 10-13): Clutch Time
If you've got 3-4 unsolved boards and 3-4 guesses left, this is where strategy matters most. Use the solver to narrow each remaining board to 1-3 options. Prioritize boards with fewer possibilities. Solve the board with only 2 options before the board with 15.
Board Prioritization Is Everything
Don't solve boards randomly. Always solve the board with the fewest remaining possibilities first. If Board 3 has only 2 options and Board 7 has 15, Board 3 gets your guess. This minimizes the chance of running out of guesses.
When to Sacrifice a Guess for Information
Sometimes the smartest move isn't solving a board. It's making a guess that tests letters you haven't tried. If 3 unsolved boards all have words with B, G, or W in them, a single guess testing those letters could crack multiple boards at once.
Expect 1-2 Nightmare Boards
With 8 boards, the odds of hitting a tricky word (double letters, uncommon patterns like FJORD or KNACK) are high. Accept that 1-2 boards will be significantly harder than the rest and budget your guesses accordingly. Don't burn 5 guesses on one stubborn board. Our double letter strategy guide can help you handle those tricky boards faster.
Octordle Game Modes
Octordle offers more game modes than any other Wordle variant. Our solver works for all of them.
Daily Octordle
The standard mode. A new 8-word puzzle every day with 13 guesses. All 8 boards are active from the start. This is the mode most players tackle first.
Sequence Octordle
Solve all 8 words one at a time. You don't see the next board until you solve (or fail) the current one. More total guesses are allowed, making it slightly more forgiving but requiring a different approach.
Rescue Octordle
Start with some clues already revealed on each board, but you get fewer guesses. It's a different kind of challenge that rewards quick pattern recognition over slow information-gathering.
Free Octordle
Unlimited practice puzzles. Great for testing strategies without the pressure of a daily streak. If you're new to Octordle, spend a few rounds here before tackling the daily. Studying common Wordle letter patterns during practice sessions will sharpen your pattern recognition across all 8 boards.
Octordle vs Quordle vs Wordle
Here's how Octordle compares to the other Wordle variants:
| Wordle | Dordle | Quordle | Octordle | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Words to solve | 1 | 2 | 4 | 8 |
| Total guesses | 6 | 7 | 9 | 13 |
| Guesses per word | 6.0 | 3.5 | 2.25 | 1.63 |
| Created by | Josh Wardle | Guilherme Töws | Freddie Meyer | Kenneth Crawford |
| Difficulty | Moderate | Hard | Very Hard | Extreme |
The key number is that 1.63 guesses per word. In Wordle, you can afford to experiment. In Octordle, every single guess must advance at least one board toward a solution. That's why the scouting phase (first 4 guesses) is so critical. Want to work your way up? Start with our Dordle Solver (2 boards) or Quordle Solver (4 boards).
Best Starting Words for Octordle
Opening words matter more in Octordle than in any other variant. With 8 boards, you need maximum letter coverage as fast as possible. Here's a proven 4-word opening sequence:
| Guess # | Word | Letters Tested | Total Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | SLATE | S, L, A, T, E | 5 letters |
| 2 | CRONY | C, R, O, N, Y | 10 letters |
| 3 | HUMID | H, U, M, I, D | 15 letters |
| 4 | PLUMB | P, L*, U*, M*, B | 17 unique letters |
After 4 guesses, you've tested 17+ unique letters across all 8 boards. That's enough data to start solving. For more on letter frequency data and why these letters matter, check our best Wordle starting words guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Octordle?
Octordle is a word puzzle where you solve eight five-letter words simultaneously in 13 guesses. Created by Kenneth Crawford in 2022, it's the most challenging mainstream Wordle variant. Each guess applies to all 8 boards at once, with separate color feedback for each.
How many guesses do you get in Octordle?
You get 13 guesses in standard Octordle. That works out to about 1.6 guesses per word on average, making it the tightest ratio of any mainstream Wordle variant. Sequence mode gives you more guesses since you solve boards one at a time.
What are the best starting words for Octordle?
Use 4 scouting guesses to test 20 unique letters. Try SLATE, then CRONY, then HUMID, then a fourth word covering remaining common letters like B, G, W, or P. With 8 boards, you need maximum letter coverage before attempting to solve anything.
Is Octordle the hardest Wordle variant?
Among mainstream variants, yes. Octordle's 1.6 guesses-per-word ratio is the tightest. Wordle gives you 6 guesses per word, Dordle gives 3.5, Quordle gives 2.25, and Octordle gives just 1.63. There are harder niche variants (like Sedecordle with 16 words), but Octordle is the hardest widely-played one.
Who created Octordle?
Kenneth Crawford created Octordle in 2022. He designed it as the ultimate Wordle challenge for players who found Quordle (4 words) too easy. The game is free to play in any web browser.
What's the difference between Octordle and Quordle?
Quordle has 4 boards with 9 guesses (2.25 per word). Octordle doubles that to 8 boards with 13 guesses (1.63 per word). Octordle also offers more game modes including Rescue mode (start with partial clues) and Challenge mode. The strategy shifts heavily toward scouting in Octordle since you have more boards to manage.
What are the different Octordle game modes?
Octordle offers Daily (new 8-word puzzle each day), Sequence (solve 8 words one at a time), Free (unlimited practice), Rescue (start with partial clues, fewer guesses), and Challenge mode. The solver works for all modes since the core letter-filtering approach is the same.
How does the Octordle Solver work?
Enter the green, yellow, and gray letters from any of your 8 Octordle boards. The solver filters 12,900+ words to show matches for that board. Use it for each board separately, starting with the boards where you have the most green letters.
